One of the many discussions that are being discussed about school assessment Is the knowledge of the students and their lever of education compared to their age. Comparing the grades of students of this generation to the generations from the past to ensure the progress of the students is improving. With all the new technology the student’s skills are improving with computers and decreasing with their outdoor activities. In the past decade the public, students and teachers have shown interest in higher education and are taking the steps necessary to Improve students In higher education (Campbell).
Students have been changing throughout history and one very noticeable aspect in students that has been changing gradually is student’s attitudes. Education assessment is constantly facing new and challenging attitudes of students due to society. Education system must also constantly be changing to keep up with students. Many situations occur because of the beliefs of the students and the beliefs of the education system defer causing a battle of understanding between the two. Students and teachers have different ways of approaching their beliefs towards education.
Other issues that are a part of educational assessment are kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADD). Kids or even some adults have that disorder which affects their learning, and has to be recognized in order to be treated. There are many types of ADD and treatment and assessment vary depending the condition the disorder. Student’s level of education: Research shows that IQ scores are increasing three IQ points per decade since the early sass’s In the united States. Does that mean that people In the past weren’t as smart as people today?
No, certainly not, but that indicates people in this day and GE, students are much more Curious and open to see a bigger world. People’s IQ average scores continue to grow because of the challenges they are facing due to the modern world. Although IQ tests have been changed and modified quite a bit they still meet the requirements of the modern age to present a challenge (Flynn). In the release of the U. S Department of Education Earn Duncan says “as we know, test scores alone will never determine how effective our schools are” as the student’s education is improving the U.
S Department of Education will be releasing more of the dents grades and students assessment. This is the first time the U. S Department of education is releasing student’s grades to the public in order to better the student’s level of education. The president of the united States is supporting the U. S Department of education In developing a new Inclusive teacher strategy with his state of the union address. Over 5,700 teachers since the president’s state of union address have been working on developing and to refine a way of teaching that will both help lead the teachers and the students to meet the requirements of the modern world.
According to the rubric of dropouts the exact reason of student’s dropout is quite broad to understand the level of the student’s education. Because of the broad range of reasons the students dropout, It Is difficult plan point a cause and work to develop a is the student’s that dropout and return back to school and the reasons behind them returning is also a wide-ranging motive. While there might not be a great understanding as to why students drop out, there is progress being made to improve the student education.
The initial visualization of assessment is to create an active process that constantly produces evidence about student growth toward reaching education objectives. This idea of assessment recognizes that the material collected is always to achieve learning aims and if used properly, it can better the student’s education and also store it. Students have been tested on whether they know how to use this information with critical thinking questions or Just a set of skills that have been learned to achieve that grade that would enable them to proceed to the next level.
It appears to be that traditional studies are not quite as accurate to achieve certain goals that studies were aiming or. The appropriate way is no longer Just to document the student’s skill by applying formulas to determine the student’s knowledge. After observing these procedures they do not tell the present goals of solving problems and using probable perceptive (Garfield). There are many ways to improving the level of education, in order to work on developing a more skilled student there are several steps of doing so.
The first to work on is the community which includes community partners and most important of all are the parents. Second is the school, which should adopt technology and agonize resources that are to be used within and out of the schools. Let’s not forget the one’s that do the most work for the least credit, the teachers; the way the teacher’s use emotional with intellectual guidance to influence student assessment. Then finally the student, assessing the student in engaging in learning project based principle. Students need to connect using integrated studies and learn to cooperate in order to expand comprehensive assessment.
Students and Technology: One of the biggest if not the biggest influence on kids and students the schools are currently facing, is technology. Although there are many pros and cons with technology it’s safe to say that there are more pros than cons. Even though technology has only been around for a short time it has had the most influence on education. One of the areas technology has effects on, is the kid’s physical health and strength. Research indicates that kids are becoming weaker since they have been spending more time on their touch screen tablets and phones.
The number of sit-up kids can do has decreased by 27 percent in the past decade, 1998 to 2008 kids are becoming less active in their daily lives (Campbell). Surprisingly the children’s body mass index IBM had not increased since ten years ago, according to Daniel Cohen of London University this meant that because of the declining in the strength fat could be replacing muscle. “That’s really worrying from a health point of view. It is good news that their IBM hasn’t risen, but worrying that pound for pound they’re weaker and probably carrying more fat,” said Consonance.
During a college study on the effects of technology in classrooms, a high percentage of students were for the idea of having a significant amount of technology in classrooms. Students said that it would enhance their learning skills. Although students are with the idea of having technology in classrooms, the issue of having would conduct a barrier between the student and the professor and others said that it would cause less class participation. Another issue the students pointed out was the fact that when they did a study on having laptops in classrooms many students were using them for uses other than class room purposes.
The general idea is that if used properly laptops in classrooms is strongly preferred. Almost 90 percent of teachers that were surveyed in a New York Times article said hat they have noticed the attention span of students has decreased since technology has become a big part of the kid’s lives. Because of the short attention span from students, the teachers are having a harder time teaching and trying to get their attention. Kid’s attention span had decreased in schools due to the entertainment that they are surrounding with, because of that classrooms seem boring hence the attention span is lessoned. I’m an entertainer. I have to do a song and dance to capture their attention” said Hope Moline Porter an English teacher from California. Another decline that Porter mentions is the decline in the student’s written work. On the other hand Kristin Purcell the director of the research at Pew thinks that there are other alternatives to this, he says “What we’re labeling as ‘distraction,’ some see as a failure of adults to see how these kids process information” which presents a great challenge on the schools and teachers to find new methods of reaching to the students of this modern day generation (Ritchie).
In 1986 Apple Computer, Inc. Began a project called Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACT. The goal of the project as to encounter how computers effect’s student learning and also how teachers teach. After ACT was launched studies show that the students who were using computers had improved test scores and also became more self-sufficient in learning on their own. In the mathematical area of the study students showed a significant incline in their grades. Another big factor was the behaviors of the students and the teachers.
The teachers found themselves more of mentors rather than presenters with information. By the end of the four year high school study 90% of the students hat were presented with ACT went on to continue higher education in college. While the rest of the entire school only fifteen percent pursued on their way to college. The effects of technology on education are the significance of positive impact that was acquired in all the topics. The overall studies of technology in schools has more pros than cons, more studies show that students have been enhancing their minds with new bright ideas and challenges .
Because of technology, students are much in touch with the rest of the world than Just what their surrounding spinsterhood. Students are considerably more conscious of what is going on in the rest of the world than ever before, the majority of that is because of social networking that students are engaged in. Subjects like geography and sociology are becoming much more common to students. 72 percent of college students use social media and networking to communicate with friends, family, and even strangers. These websites helped the normal person without having to step foot away from his home to know what is happening to the rest of the world.
Since more and more people are covering what is going on in the rest of the world the tremendous amount of violence has decreased quite significantly. Students have become open-minded towards different races and religions. Assessing students with ADD: children and adolescents which sometimes continues throughout adulthood in some cases. The condition (ADD) is found in 3% to 5% of children; it is a condition that effects children in paying attention and are easily distracted and frustrated when assigned a task that is uninteresting to them.
Diagnosing a child with ADD is not a simple task, because cases like these very from person to person. In order to diagnose a child with ADD they must be viewed from the teachers and from the parents and from peers surrounding the child to analyze this condition. Parents and peers that surround the daily life of the child are interviewed, also a complete teacher and parent child behavior rating measures. Many other tests and examinations to get a clear understanding of the child’s condition must be taken to understand the extremity of the condition (Unstoppable).
Treating and assessing a child with the condition ADD is a medical treatment which the child must take certain medicine to overcome the condition. There’s only en treatment that does not require the use of medicine which is called behavioral modification, it is a treatment that scientist discovered to help children with ADD that is medicinal. Scientist’s still have not found out why some children are diagnosed with that disorder even after decades of research because it is such a broad cause.
Conflicts between students and teachers: Students and teacher conflicts occur on normal bases, some cases make the news others are resolved within the school itself but none the less it’s an issue that needs a thorough analysis. Most of the conflicts that occur are between students homeless, some are personalized and some are substantive. The conflicts between the students are usually for the most part personalized conflicts, such as name- calling. Most of the time these conflicts become worse before they get better, much of the hype that makes it worse are the surrounding students that exacerbate it.
John MacDonald a high school teacher in Massachusetts calls this the “Jerry Springer syndrome”, he adds to this that students like seeing fights because that is what they see on television and video games. It is the teacher’s Job to stop the conflict and solve it because students don’t know how to solve it. Other personalized conflicts are between teachers and students, these type of conflicts usually don’t lead to fighting but there more of verbal conflicts. In many situations students usually skip that class and face the consequences later with detention or after school activity.
These personal conflicts can occur from both sides either from the teacher or the student; they could be because the student doesn’t like the teacher because of the way he chooses to teach or because the teacher doesn’t like the student for personal reasons. Substantive conflicts are the more serious conflicts that could end up leading to the news, because there usually peaceful conflicts for the most part they are resolved within the school. With situations like these they’re usually caused by ideas or disagreement on a subject or real everyday issues.
However the difference between substantive and personal conflicts is that substantive conflicts can be resolved when the outcome has been reached without compromising their position. Solving conflicts between teachers and students requires many steps to be taken. Usually the first step should start at home, cause it is better to have an adult to adult conversation to understand the big anything going on in school that he’s not comfortable with, from there on it’ll be between adults.
From there if the problem persists the parents or guardian should call the teacher to check-in on the issue to help straighten things out. When meeting up with the teacher, parents should be honest with the teacher when telling them what the students thinks of their teacher. Allowing the student to converse with the teacher during the presence of the parents or guardian will give an idea if the issue can be resolved. Last but not least parents are advised to stay in contact with the teacher to follow up with the situation so that if a problem does occur the teacher and the student are comfortable telling the parents.
Conclusion: To put it all in perspective education assessment is always changing to meet the requirements of their society, materials that are used today might not be used in the future to help student aid. That being said education assessment is not one standard way for all schools, different schools, different environments, and different societies require different strategies of assessment. Improving the level of education is intuition to develop throughout the years according to the U. S Department of Education it will continue to grow.
One thing that is going to stick around for the rest of the future is technology, is it a vast part of education and the lives of people today. Using technology to assess education has put a huge impact on expanding the horizon of students. Studies have yet to see long term effects of technology on students because of the short period of time technology been around. But over the fifty years of research, technology indicates that it is effective in education both to learn from and to learn with. The IANAL part of what know today about technology is that, it works.
There are many different forms of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder otherwise known as ADD. Some types ADD include student that have a Learning Disability (OLD), and there are several other types like Mood Disorders and Oppositional Defiant Disorder; treatment depends on the type of ADD it is. The hard part if finding out the child has ADD and the type of ADD it is, after that process it’s either treated medicinally or with psychological therapy. ADD is not a disease; the kids appear to be normal and are usually above average students.
Conflicts between students and teachers are always going to occur, according to MacDonald there as common as rain. Conflicts are something one learns from, when growing up conflicts are the situations a person can reflect on to make better choices. Substantive conflicts are the ones that are usually solved providing certain facts and understand, personal conflicts are opinionated, and these conflicts relate to a person’s opinion, which sometimes lead to unresolved differences. Educational assessment that deals with conflicts requires meetings to understand the reason for the conflicts in order to prevent or reduce further ones.
